Haunts & Heroes is a photographic overview of the history of Chicago Jazz, harking back to the late Steve Schapiro’s portraits of Lil Hardin Armstrong and Earl “Father” Hines to Michael Jackson’s images of contemporary artists Isaiah Collier and Nicole Mitchell. Enroute are pictorial visits to Fred Anderson’s Velvet Lounge, The Green Mill, Joe & Wayne Segal’s Jazz Showcase, Hothouse, Hungry Brain, Elastic, Andy’s, Constellation, the Southside’s legendary New Apartment Lounge and a host of other ‘haunts,’ some still vibrant, others lost to the mists of time.  Pooled from the archives of over a dozen consistent documentarians of the city’s varied and inclusive scene, which embraces the music’s tradition to avant garde, the mobile exhibit, in concert with UNESCO’s International Jazz celebration in Chicago, will vary in each location it visits from Ravinia, to the Logan Center, the Lyric Opera and Symphony Center.
