Chicago West Community Music Center to Trace City’s Jazz Legacy and Global Impact at 2026 International Day of Jazz Celebration
The Chicago West Community Music Center (CWCMC) Community Orchestra will celebrate the 2026 International Day of Jazz with an engaging and educational 90-minute program scheduled to take place April 28, 2026, at the Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago. The program will highlight the city’s role in shaping the evolution of jazz and its profound influence on the art form. Tracing the chronological journey of Chicago jazz, the concert begins with the early sounds of Louis Armstrong and Lil Hardin Armstrong, whose New Orleans roots helped establish Chicago as a jazz capital. The program will move through the innovative piano stylings of Earl “Fatha” Hines, the youthful energy of the Austin High Gang, and the influential guidance of Captain Walter Dyett, whose musical mentorship nurtured generations of Chicago’s finest musicians. The performance will also explore the sophisticated grooves of Ramsey Lewis and the boundary-pushing creativity of Herbie Hancock, illustrating how Chicago’s jazz legacy continues to inspire artists around the world. Featuring live performances, historical commentary, and multimedia elements, the program will celebrate the city’s enduring jazz spirit—its innovation, diversity, and cultural impact.
